Why Allah allows suffering?

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate

For better understanding, first you should know purpose of our life : Click here to read Purpose of life in Islam.

Allah told us there is life without suffering in hereafter, we call it paradise. So we are in a test for that life.

Why Allah allows suffering?

This same question was asked by angels to Allah when he was going to create Human beings.

“And, when your Lord said to the angels, ‘Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority.’ They said, ‘Will You place upon it one who causes corruption therein and sheds blood, while we declare Your praise and sanctify You?’ Allah said, ‘Indeed, I know that which you do not know.’(Quran 2:30)

So the simple answer for this question is most of suffering is made by Human being using his freewill,  but Allah may not stop everything, Because that is his wisdom. This life is a test for evil free eternal world. So he need to know who is obedient and who is disobedient by giving freewill to human beings. So human can choose his way to paradise or hell. If there is no suffering then it will be like paradise. Then this world will not be a test.

Before I give you answer for this, You should give me a proper answer for my questions. Why are you working hard? Why are you studying before exam? Why are you participating in competitions? Why are you going for Gym? etc, So the answer will be "for achieving something you need in this world" Right? Yes that's it. Then the simple answer for this question is we are in an examination conducting by God to give you what you deserve. There will be yes or no questions and Essay type questions, Which type of questions give you more marks? sure that is essay type and that is also difficult too.

As per Islamic beliefs, this life is not the eternal abode for human beings. This is a mere examination hall. For entering into a perfect evil free house, i.e. paradise, one needs to qualify through this examination. For example, for having a wonderful Job, you need to go through a hardship of 15 years. To witness daylight, one needs to survive the darkness of the night. To attain wisdom, one needs to go through a long series of unknown experiences. So we need to keep patience and trust in Allah in every situations we face. So Allah sent us to this world to test us to know who are truthful and who are not. So there will be evil and good. Both Good and bad are test. like Rich and poor. Wealth is a test for a rich person that how he spend it?, did he help person in need?, did he give obligatory Zakath? etc. And poverty is also test for the poor, to know his patience towards Allah.

“˹He is the One˺ Who created death and life in order to test which of you is best in deeds. And He is the Almighty, All-Forgiving” (Quran 67:2)

“And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient” Who, when disaster strikes them, say, "Indeed we belong to Allah , and indeed to Him we will return." (Quran 2:155 - 156)

“It is not righteousness that you turn your faces east or west. But it is righteousness to believe in God, and the Last Day, and the Angels, and the Book, and the Messengers; to spend of your substance, out of love for Him, for your kin, for orphans, for the needy, for the wayfarer, for those who ask, and for the ransom of slaves; to be steadfast in prayer, and practice regular charity, to fulfill the contracts which ye have made (to people and Allah); and to be firm and patient, in pain (or suffering) and adversity, and throughout all periods of panic. Such are the people of truth, the God-fearing.”(Quran 2:177)

The above verse says about our real purpose. And the Quran and Sunnah teaches us how to face and overcome every situations we face. So Allah said he will test every body with good and evil, And he gave proper solution for every problems. The Islamic solutions given in the Quran and Sunnah can solve many of the problems faced by mankind. Alcohol and drugs are prohibited. Interest and insurance type contacts are forbidden. The hoarding of wealth is prohibited. Gambling prohibited, Sexual promiscuity is forbidden, The institution of marriage is the only legitimate way a man and woman can have a relationship. The family unit is promoted and core to societies wellbeing. The protection of environment promoted, Charity is made as a key factor in Islam and Zakath is made obligatory for all except poor. and many more things are here.

So Islam is the solution to all mankind's problems except death when implemented correctly. If we didn't follow it correctly then there will be it's consequences because of our own activities. But there is some punishment from Allah when we really deserve it. Then that became punishment for Sinners and test for Believers. And some disaster may happen on earth based on natural laws made by Allah. Like Tectonic Movements that makes earthquakes but there is also advantages too.. Tectonic Movements helps to stabilize climate over the long-run and they generate land and landforms. Without tectonic plate movement there would be no mountains. And also we may face some diseases due to our own or society's activities. So we can't say that Allah gave me that disease, But Allah made our body within some limit to test us.

Somebody makes foolish arguments like, Why Allah allowed murder? Allah didn't support murder he forbid murdering innocents and promote preventing bad things. But bad people are using their freewill to kill innocents, If nobody helped that innocent or he didn't see any way to escape then he will be killed. Allah will give punishment to the murderer and reward to that innocent. So we can't say, why Allah didn't help him? because there is only possible way is to do some miracles to help him. Then it will be unfair. Because if Allah do some miracle to help that innocent then Allah must do miracles to help all other people in this world. Then we can't say that this world is a test. (Miracles are only given to Allah's prophets and Quran is the miracle given to Muhammad (Pbuh))

So we know, this world is running based on universal laws made by Allah. So some of evils are related to our own freewill and some are based on natural laws. For example:
Think about it, if he continue doing this, What will be the result? As per theory of gravity there is no scope for him to escape from this accident. Is it right to blame God for this man's action?

"Corruption has spread on land and sea as a result of what people’s hands have done, so that Allah may cause them to taste ˹the consequences of˺ some of their deeds and perhaps they might return ˹to the Right Path˺."(Quran 30:41)

“Whatever misfortune befalls you is a consequence of your own deeds. But much of it He forgives” (Quran 42:30)

So most of evils and problems in this world are due to Human activities and also some are made by Allah to test you or to punish you.

The trial will not only with bad things but also good things like wealth. Allah judge all of us based on what we got and how we responded towards it. It may be through suffering, wealth, knowledge etc.

“…Had Allah willed, He would have made a single community of people, but (He did not), so that He may test you in what He has given to you. Strive, then, to excel each other in good deeds. To Allah is the return for all of you. Then Allah shall tell you about that in which you disputed.” (Quran 5:48)

Now imagine a world without hardships: There are no wars, poverty, natural disasters, Everyone is healthy, no feelings like greed, enmity, hatred, etc. Will the world value peace if there is no war? Will people value money and work hard if there is no poverty? Will someone become a farmer if has sufficient money to spend? Will someone ever understand the power of nature if there were no disasters? Will people respect doctors or medical science? Will people value life? Will people understand the value of love? Will people respect God? Will there is purpose for life? Then can we call life as a test for hereafter?. So if this life is a test, then there must be suffering. Those things are for testing our patience and faiths towards Allah. Theses may be caused by Human or god. Allah warned Adam (as) before sending him to earth,

“So We said, ‘O Adam, indeed this is an enemy to you and to your wife. Then let him not remove you from Paradise so you would suffer.’” (Quran 20:117)

So we can easily understand that this world is a test and there will be suffering. The trials help us remember we’re not in charge of our lives. The happiness, comfort and all the cures are from Allah. When you forget, Allah will do something drastic to make you see again. It is to shake us up from a plastic Dunya! Sometimes you need something serious to wake up!

Before it takes a life or death experience, turn to Him and rely on him: When you are alone in the hospital, when your family lie about you, when your friends attack you, when you have no money for food, when your partner hurts you, when your children laugh at you... Seek help and turn to Allah.

You need something more powerful than anyone else. Allah may deprive you of something cherished so that you recognize He is the ultimate source of everything. He will never turn you away.

We know that there are a lot of people around the world are accepting Islam. Most of them tells us that they found Islam when thinking about the purpose of life after faced some trials in their life. So the trials also have some good purposes. See one example,

“And it may be that you dislike a thing which is good for you and that you like a thing which is bad for you. Allah knows but you do not know.” (Quran 2:216)

No matter how great our sufferings, they are not everlasting. We have a sure knowledge that sooner or later, all this trouble will come to an end because our stay in this world will be terminated one day and we will be transferred to another everlasting world. And as soon as we are transferred from this world, our anxiety and trouble will end provided we have prepared ourselves for it.

According to our belief, God rewards man for his sufferings, whether he be a Muslim or a nonMuslim. Those persons who have committed sins get reward of sufferings in the form of remission of the punishment in the life hereafter. And those who did not commit any sin, like Prophets and Imams, and still suffered most of all, will be rewarded by higher and greater prestige and honor : in the presence of Allah.

The life of Prophets of Allah are good example for us. They all faced difficulties in their whole life. Ayyub (as) was given a terrible illness and his whole family left him, Yusuf (as) was unjustly imprisoned and taken away from his family, The Prophet Muhammad (as) was orphaned, his followers were tortured, his uncle humiliated him, many of his family passed away.

Here is some Quran verses related to test and suffering:

“Do the people think that they will be left to say, "We believe" and they will not be tried?. Indeed We have tested those who were before them. So Allah will surely know the ones who are truthful, and He will surely know the liars.” (Quran 29 : 3 – 2)

"Or do you think that you will enter Paradise while such [trial] has not yet come to you as came to those who passed on before you? They were touched by poverty and hardship and were shaken until [even their] messenger and those who believed with him said, "When is the help of Allah?" Unquestionably, the help of Allah is near. (Quran 2:214)

"Of course, you shall be tested in your wealth and yourselves; and, of course, you shall hear hurting statements from those who have been given the Book before you, and from those who associate (others with Allah in His divinity). If you observe patience and fear Allah, then this (observance) is among the matters of firm resolution." (Quran 3:186)

“Indeed, We have made it a torment for the wrongdoers” (Quran 37:63)

“And We divided them throughout the earth into nations. Of them some were righteous, and of them some were otherwise. And We tested them with good [times] and bad that perhaps they would return [to obedience].” (Quran 7:168)

“Every soul will taste death. And We test you with evil and with good as trial; and to Us you will be returned.” (Quran 21:35)

“And know that your properties and your children are but a trial and that Allah has with Him a great reward.” (Quran 8:28)

“Indeed, We have made that which is on the earth adornment for it that We may test them [as to] which of them is best in deed” (Quran 18:7)

“And We will surely test you until We make evident those who strive among you [for the cause of Allah] and the patient, and We will test your affairs.” (Quran 47:31)

“the One who created death and life, so that He may test you as to which of you is better in his deeds. And He is the All-Mighty, the Most-Forgiving” (Quran 67:2)

“Indeed, We created man from a sperm-drop mixture that We may try him; and We made him hearing and seeing. We have shown him the way to be either grateful or ungrateful.” (Quran 76:2-3)

"Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear" (Quran 2:286)
